The truth about the asanas (according to the classical Yoga)
How the asanas understood a traditional Yogi? We speak with Abdullah Mahmud, Yogi who studied in depth the philosophy and practice of classical yoga in an ancient temple of India. Writes Judith Castella.
He was initiated into yoga by his grandfather when he was 7 years old. After actively participating in the war for the independence of Bangladesh, in 1972, 16 years, Abdullah It came in an ashram in Assam (India) to deepen the knowledge of yoga. In the West we understand that (mostly) doing yoga is to make positions, i.e., make a few body shape static or dynamic stretching exercises accompanied by breathing patterns. Is it so?

How many positions understand the traditional yoga practice and how new positions have arisen?
880 from the Vedic culture original positions are known. But over the centuries the great masters have developed variations on the original positions giving rise to new positions, so there are thousands of positions. When the teacher understands deeply the 'mother' positions you can create variations on enhancing certain aspects that change the out of position.
Does it mean the term? Hatha yoga?
Hatha It should be translated as "going against the will", "try hard". Although it is very common to translate Hatha as Sun)has) and moon)THA), this is a totally false interpretation. The yogic practices require a strong will, determination and constancy, they are not practices that are carried out by taste, because they represent a major effort, duty, discipline and have a firm determination.
How attitudes and effects in our body?
All positions work on different levels in our bodies: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. But each stance affects differently on these, working with more intensity on one or the other.
The physical postures work through twisting, stretching, contraction and dilation. On the mental plane, each posture creates a mental state of the four possible States of mind (concentrated, agitated, scattered, stunned). At the emotional level each posture causes a certain mental attitude or emotion. In the spiritual facilitates the ability to discern between Purusha (be) and prakriti (matter).
Do that regularly should be performed postures?
The daily practice of at least 40 minutes is recommended. But if this is not possible, every practitioner should be organized according to their possibilities, trying to maintain a regularity.
Where should we put the attention when postures are performed?
Beginner practitioners should your mental attention to form, in specific parts of the body where working posture, breathing, have full awareness of the body in the form of the position.
Advanced practitioners must put their mental health care at the point of concentration that corresponds to each posture; This can indicate that the teacher or student can recognize it by itself.
Are the positions either static or dynamic?
Of the 880 matrix view, 871 are static positions and 9 are dynamic because they have a therapeutic value.
