"No one can ' do yoga." Yoga is your essence, your natural state.
What you can do are practices that reveal your natural state resistance"
Sharon Gannon and David Life

It says David Live: "We use mainly asana as tool for teaching, but in the context of a class listening to music, we are inspired by traditional texts. The yoga of the sound is one of the paths to enlightenment".

Sharon Gannon elaborates on that idea by highlighting the importance of ahimsa, non-violence. For her, the Jivamukti yoga is its engagement with the world, a form of spiritual activism. "The Jivamukti method lives ahimsa as an essential part of our practice, because when it is integrated and non-violence is experienced as a result, we can transform our current culture. Why vegetarianism is an important part of the Jivamukti method".

This method was created by David Life and Sharon Gannon in 1984, and they called this practice as "Jivamukti" ("liberation in life") because they wanted students to remember the ultimate goal of the practice: spiritual enlightenment and knowledge. "The name Jivamukti yoga reveals the fact that it is possible to have a full and satisfying life in this world, while we can obtain spiritual progress and perhaps get enlightenment (Samadhi) in this life".

He says Ximena Gutierrez, teacher of this method in Nicaragua, on its website Good Karma: "Since his first lessons they have taught a modern interpretation of the hindu system, form the Western mindset could understand. Therefore, Jivamukti emphasizes postures linked to the movement as his primary technique, but other practices such as meditation, devotional singing and the study of ancient texts also play an important role."

The class activity is vigorous and intellectually stimulating. Each session promotes the educational aspect of practice, giving students a link to the source where these ideas came from and, at the same time, incorporating each one of the principles on which this method is supported:

  1. Scriptures - Study of the ancient yogic teachings, including Sanskrit chants.
  2. Bhakti - the recognition of the universal consciousness as the goal of yoga.
  3. Ahimsa - practice of a life without violence, with a compassionate lifestyle that emphasizes the ethical vegetarianism and animal rights.
  4. Nada Yoga - the development of musical mind and a body achieved through sound absorption. Appreciation of the sacred sounds of the yoga.
  5. Meditation - connection with the eternal and immutable reality that surrounds us.

Creating Jivamukti, David Life and Sharon Gannon incorporated studying Ashtanga yoga with spiritual teachings, with particular emphasis on How to apply yoga philosophy to everyday life.
