A Gurdjieff, a Dervish and a pranayama

Once was a time a Finder Gurdjieff that, in pos of the truth, is found to a wise Dervish and between both addressed the heart of the pranayama in half of them deserts of the Asia Central. Joaquín G. Weil writes.

Gurdjieff: "Believing it to be useful, the practicality as the instructions of the Yogis, this is: after inhaling, I keep a time and then slowly exhalo".

Dervish: "All the books breathing exercise and taught in contemporary esoteric schools can only damage".

The Dervish, according to Gurdjieff, tells us still arguing that breathing in a natural way is self-regulating in relation to needs, so any artificial modification of breath disturbed throughout the body. And concludes: "so – since you've asked me - my advice is: with your breathing exercises".

From my experience and perspective, what the dervish of Gurdjieff (maybe same Gurdjieff) is true, except for two details in the premises that actually make that all the argument is wrong.

Truth is that the breathing natural not can be overcome by any type of breathing contrived. In this is an error common in various techniques of breathing or exercises that advise such or which technical of breathing, always wrong by contrived. Any human concept may never overcome the nature.

I am going to explain an aspect of breath that I have not yet had opportunity to read anywhere: the breathing has two aspects, the physiological (natural) and the emotional.

Natural physiologic respiration is second to none as it responds to subtle body and respects the balance with other bodies, as well points the dervish of Gurdjieff. He issue is that, usually, in all or in the vast majority of them people the rhythm and the amplitude of the breath comes governed more by those aspects emotional that by them demands physiological of the organism. That without count that, besides them lungs, others organs (liver, kidneys, gallbladder, spleen, etc) also is found seriously affected by them ups and downs emotional and mental, with what a so called balance natural in our organism is more an ideal that a reality.

On the other hand, all pranayama or yoga of breath that deserves the name not intended at all "correct" nature, but, on the contrary, precisely release the breath of those ups and downs mental and emotional, to reach what might be called the "breathing natural"i.e., which responds to the needs and balances the body. And, at the same time, using the causality in the other sense (in the sense right) achieve a balance mental, emotional and organic. For this and other reasons the pranayama is highly beneficial for the health.

The Councils of Desikachar

This dervish of Meetings with remarkable men was actually a Gurdjieff / Dervish, as mentions books and the "schools esoteric contemporary" that an old dervish of the depths desert of Asia rare is that knew, not so Gurdjieff. The case is that the character, real or invented or half/half, talking forgot another aspect that contradicted what he was just saying, and is the very fact of the speaking. In fact, when we talk about are making breathing all to phrasing that makes our mouth, where the needs of the air and the balance between these elements and organs, etc. which mentions the Dervish are subject entirely to the speech (in this case, speech on the same subject).

With all, there are that give you the reason in the Council end: best was that Gurdjieff stop their exercises of breathing and (what is worse) with retention, read in some book, not know what nor of who.

To conclude these reflections will give voice to T. K. V. Desikachar, in a book of conversations about yoga:

"Can you do pranayama without counting? Yes. What is pranayama but be with the breath? This is very difficult and is why we have so many techniques. Normally the body has its own rhythms breathing and not we are aware of this. Counting, arrived to involve us consciously in the breath. (…) If we are fully involved in the pranayama, would who is concerned of in what number are? Type, quantity and other techniques, rhythms are only means, not a final goal. It is intended to not need any technique. If we can be integrated in the breath, breath, this is pranayama, the highest pranayama active witness. "But this is easier said that to do so".
