Interview with Swami Jyothirmayah: "More than 80% of physical and emotional impurities can be removed through the breath"
Swami Jyothirmayah is, in addition to advanced meditation instructor for more than 20 years, international coordinator of the art of living. It will be in Spain from 22 July 2 providing both free workshops about deepening in Madrid and Barcelona. It explains the keys to meditate.
Question: Only in so far the year has visited more than 30 cities and have thousands of volunteers in charge. For you it seems easy to live in peace and harmony giving meditation courses, but you're a person with many responsibilities, and yet always you see happy and serene. How can be quiet no matter what?
Swami Jyothirmayah: In this modern age, it seems that we are constantly gathering information or making any mental activity. Rarely we take time to think and reflect. As a result, there is an overload of information, and we may feel tired and bored.
The moments of stillness in our mind are moments of creativity and innovation, heal and rejuvenate our minds. The deep rest and dynamic activities are complementary. We can only be dynamically active if we have given a profound rest not only our body to our mind. And the breathing and meditation exercises provide the rest.
How can meditation help in modern life?
Meditation is vital to personal development. It provides deep relaxation in the shortest possible time. At the same time it gives you energy. The more deep rest, more dynamic you will be. For good health and a sustainable welfare, meditation is the key.
Whenever you meditate the brain structure changes, the gray matter in the brain increases when you meditate. You also remove toxins and tension. Medically, there are numerous research papers on how meditation helps improve conditions such as hypertension, heart problems, sleep disorders and disorders of the nervous system, among others.
When you meditate regularly, you have a healthy body and mind, your intellect is acute and strengthens memory. Meditate for 20 minutes in the morning and in the afternoon 20, make it part of your life and see for yourself.
How to live the "yogic principles" in modern life?
For that we need to know the different layers of our existence: body, breath, mind, intellect, memory, ego and being. If we are aware of that body and mind are connected through breathing, we are in a better position to manage our thoughts and emotions and live these principles becomes simpler.
Be aware that everything is constantly changing, that the body undergoes changes and also the mind, gives us a sense of peace. Likewise there is something inside us that does not change, there is a point of reference through which we experience changes. This subtle and most immutable of our existence is being. The ancient science of Ayurveda believes that a person can not be healthy until it is in contact with this more subtle aspect, and there is harmony between the different layers of existence. This knowledge be us help to live in the present moment and be in a State of perfect health.
It devotes some time to self. Take a few days of the year to align yourself with nature, waking up with the Sunrise, practice yoga, eat light food and see how you feel.
You have mentioned the benefits of breathing, can you tell us a bit more?
Our first act in this world was to inhale, and the last will be exhaling. Synonymous with breath of life. However, normally do not us it is taught, neither at home nor at school, the importance of breathing and its impact for the mind and body.
Breathing has proven to be an effective tool to eliminate stress and impurities from the body and bring clarity and concentration. It plays a vital role in how we feel physically and emotionally. More than 80% of impurities, physical and emotional, can be eliminated through respiration. However, most of us only use 35% of our lung capacity.
If you notice your breathing, you will notice that there are different rhythms and that are each associated with a different emotion. As well as the mind influences breathing, we can also manage our emotions through respiration. Meditation gives us the ability to calm the mind and access the source energy within each one. To begin to meditate, you don't need to enclose it in a cave; you only need the proper technique to calm the mind. If you meditate daily you can leverage the internal energy that you never knew existed.
This workshop, which will be free, will not be just a lecture on the benefits of breathing, will be a hands-on workshop in which participants will leave with tools to manage the mind.
We often read that meditation is a good tool to overcome the stress and depression, but it is useful to meditate even if you are happy and quiet?
Of course, meditation is as mental hygiene. In the same way that we brush teeth every day to the keep the dental hygiene must take a daily time and meditate. Regular meditation is the key to continuous well-being.
