The expansion of Yoga in Spain: Women pioneers
The work of expansion of yoga in Spain thanks to some pioneer women is not well known. In this article, Ramiro Calle remembers them as a tribute.
From the creation of the center of yoga Shadak in 1971, where he played a very prominent as organizer and teacher role Almudena Haurie Mena, they began to give a series of events that were going to help a lot to promote yoga in our country.
Although it was virtually unknown in Spain and the number of practitioners was very small, media began to echo this ancient discipline which is proposed as a method of enormous effectiveness to combat anxiety and achieve a better quality of life, psychological and physical. I remember that one day called me to three spaces of TVE, when a few years before were rare persons who had heard the word yoga.
I think that it is strict justice to recall two of the greatest teachers of true Hatha Yoga that has had this country, undisputed pioneer of this technique of self-realization in Spain. I am referring to Almudena Haurie and a Mari Nieves Corral.
In those distant years, the rector of the Autonomous University of Madrid from then, Gratiniano Nieto, appointed me special yoga teacher. I taught for five years in the rectorship of the University, while Mari Nieves Corral was my assistant professor in the Faculty of medicine, where he has taught over five years.
Meanwhile, Almudena Hauríe worked as a teacher in classrooms for the elderly, under the Ministry of culture, where he taught with a special reception for several years. So the yoga was expanding slowly but inexorably.
Occasionally there were news media that aroused the curiosity about this mysterious psychosomatic science, as, for example that Cari Grand has had removed from smoking with the help of yoga or a Russian astronaut was practicing yoga in his space travels.
The entry of yoga at the University was an important milestone and as a result I was requested for many media. Already had made years ago in other countries number of scientific evidence to validate the scope of yoga techniques. It was time that I myself I referred to a number of medical tests with various specialists, to evidence the healthy influence of the asanas, pranayama and deep relaxation.
They began to attend the yoga Center as students a good number of doctors of different specialties: Orthopedic surgeons, internists, psychiatrists, oncologists and others. Yoga interest grew and a prominent Publisher hired me a collection of 52 fascicles on the various yogic methods.
Gradually the yoga was filtering in many areas, although it has been in the last ten years when there has been that "yogomania" that yoga has become a discipline on which many speak, they read less and less practiced, even already having tens and tens of thousands of practitioners in Spain and an increasing number of centers, institutes, gyms and establishments where yoga and meditation classes are given.
Calculation on 500,000 people which have already passed through our Centre. Fortunately, even more free skeptics have begun to realize the healthy range of yoga. And let us not forget that, as reads the ancient yogic adage, 'Is worth a gram of practice than tons of theory'.
More than 50 years has been Calle Ramiro teaching yoga. He began teaching at home and created an Academy of yoga correspondence for all Spain and Latin America. In January of l971 opened its Yoga Center Shadak, that have already passed more than half a million people. His 250 published works include more than fifty devoted to yoga and related disciplines. He has made Yoga the purpose and sense of his life, having traveled a hundred times to India, the homeland of yoga.
